Do you want an Aussie accent?

If you are new in Australia, you might be puzzled wherever you go as you will not have a clue what people are talking. Even people from English speaking countries like USA, UK and Canada find it hard to understand Australians. Australians have their own accent which is getting really popular these days. Apart from slangs which has been mentioned in section “Commonly used Australian words and phrases”, you need to get acquainted with accent as well. Moreover, if you become fluent in Aussie English, the chances of your getting good job becomes higher. Here are some resources that you can utilise to sound more like Australians.

  • Aussie English: This is a blog site written by Pete Smissen. He teaches English via his own YouTube channel which you can subscribe to. If you want to learn Aussie English, please visit his YouTube channel.
  • Watch movies/comedy shows/TV shows: If you want to learn Aussie accent quickly, watch Australian movies and shows as much as possible. Even though, describing each of the Australian shows is out of the scope of this site, below are some of the shows and movies that you can watch. These shows may be old but still serves its purpose:
  1. The crocodile hunter: This page cannot be written without mentioning this show and the famous Australian star “Steve Irwin”. Stephen Robert Irwin (22 February 1962 – 4 September 2006) was an Australian zookeeper, television personality, wild life expert and conservationist. You can find many videos in You tube if you search “Steve Irwin” or “The crocodile hunter”.
  2. “Australia” the movie: Australia is an epic romantic drama movie starring “Nicole Kidman” and “Hugh Jackman”. The movie was released on 18 November 2008 and won many film awards.
  3. Carl Barron You tube channel: Carl Barron is an Australian stand-up comedian. His style is based on observational humour. To watch his videos, please visit his Youtube channel.
  4. Some of other movies that are made in Australia: Red dog, Mad Max, Rabbit-Proof Fence.
