Pre-departure preparations

After applying for a visa, you probably feel anxious about the outcome which is normal. With a bit of uncertainty, students wait until Australian immigration decides about their visa and in most cases, if you have met their requirements, the outcome is that you get visa approval. If you are reading this page after you got your visa approval, congratulations.

However, the visa approval is just the beginning of your new life abroad.  There are a couple of things that you might have already planned after getting a visa. However, this is just a reminder:

  • Shopping: Even though most cities in Australia has plenty of shopping malls and grocery stores, you might want to bring some pairs of your clothes that are immediately needed. Please, be mindful of what you can bring and what you cannot. For more information on what you cannot bring, please visit the Australian Border Force’s webpage.
  • Your temporary stay arrangements in Australia: It is always a good idea to find at least a temporary room in Australia after you book your tickets and know when is your arrival date in Australia. Plan accordingly and book the room if you do not know anybody in Australia. Alternatively, you can ask your university to arrange a room for you. After you book the room, make sure you have the full address and contact details of the accommodation provider. Ask them if they can give the airport pick-up service.
  • Your travel documents: So most important documents that you need are your travel documents such as passport, visa and air tickets. Contact your local air ticket agent and book the ticket(s). Make sure your arrival date is prior to the course commencement date.
  • Your enrolment papers: Do not forget to pack the documents that are required for enrolment. Even though you have paid the university, you have to go through a proper enrolment procedure after your arrival in Australia. The papers you may need include “Confirmation of Enrolment (COE)” and your identity documents. Please ask your agent and/or your university to confirm what is needed during enrolment.
  • Get information about your flight(s): Sometimes you may have to take more than one flight depending on where you are from and which Australian city is your destination. It is always a good idea to get as much information as possible about the airlines, connecting airports and customs you have to face, to avoid hassles. Travel as light as possible and eat healthy during the flight duration.
  • Get Australian currency: Apart from your tuition fees which you have already paid to your university, you need pocket money. You can contact your local bank and get a travel card which is the best option as it is safer to travel with a ‘travel money card’ than cash or even a travellers’ cheque.
  • Get a mobile phone for travel: Even though you can purchase a mobile phone and SIM card in Australia, it is still better to bring your own mobile and your own SIM card (if it allows roaming calls) with you, as you can call your family to inform your whereabouts until you arrive at your new room.

Now you are all set to come to Australia. All you have to do is: board the plane and buckle up. Dream high and the sky is your limit. Welcome to the land of opportunities.
